THE Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has activated funeral and insurance compensation benefits for victims of the road traffic accident claimed 17 people on Tuesday at Manyame Bridge in Chitungwiza.
In a statement, ICZ confirmed that both vehicles involved in the crash, a commuter omnibus and a 30-tonne haulage truck were insured.
The lorry had COMESA Yellow Card cover, while the omnibus was compliant with the Road Traffic Act, including Motor Cover and Public Passenger Liability.
“ICZ immediately activated the insurance cover and contracted a funeral parlour to provide comprehensive funeral and burial services for all the deceased within the borders of Zimbabwe,” reads the statement.
Relatives have been advised to contact ICZ via its Toll-Free Number 591 for the processing of insurance compensation in line with provisions of the Road Traffic Act. The council said its Call Centre was equipped to provide guidance and expedite access to the benefits.
In collaboration with the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), ICZ said it was working to ensure families of the deceased received the necessary support.
“The ICZ and its members stand in solidarity with the nation in this period of mourning,” reads the statement.
“We remain committed to upholding our promise of support and financial relief to the bereaved through insurance compensation.”
The crash occurred when a haulage truck reportedly collided head-on with a commuter omnibus at the busy Manyame Bridge in Chitungwiza, leaving 17 people dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
In a statement, PAZ national coordinator Mr Tafadzwa Goliati said they were deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic accident.
“Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and those affected by this devastating incident,” he said.
“We commend the emergency services for their prompt response to the scene and their efforts in retrieving bodies and clearing the wreckage. This tragic incident highlights the need for continued vigilance on our roads and adherence to safety measures to prevent such accidents”.
“Pastors4ED have also echoed the sentiment and consoled the families of the deceased.
“We, as Pastors4ED, are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic road traffic accident that claimed the lives of 17 people in Chitungwiza,” said Prophetess Dr Idirashe Dongo on behalf of Pastors4ED Movement.
“Our hearts go out to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.”
