Idai victims: More tents needed

George Maponga Masvingo Bureau
OVER 250 tents are urgently required to provide temporary shelter to families whose homes were destroyed by Cyclone Idai across Masvingo Province.

At least 500 families, most of them in Bikita, were left homeless following the cyclone which killed five people in the district.

The cyclone left several people injured and affected over 5 000 households across the province.

Aid like food and clothes has been reaching the affected families but the shortage of tents is a cause for concern. Masvingo Provincial Administrator Mr Fungai Mbetsa, who is the Civil Protection Unit chair here, said they required at least 250 tents. ‘’We still have very serious shortage of tents to provide temporary shelter to families that were left homeless,’’ he said.

‘’The situation is still dire with regards to tents especially in Bikita District where more than 251 families were left homeless. We continue to appeal for more tents from well-wishers and our development partners.’’

Mr Mbetsa said those left homeless were currently stuck at schools or staying with relatives stressing.

‘’As I am speaking right now I am in Bikita and I am happy to announce that our District Civil Protection Committees have been busy running around in all the four cyclone-hit areas to make sure all the affected families are assisted but shortage of tents remains a challenge especially in Bikita,’’ said Mr Mbetsa.
