A NUMBER of Mamelodi Sundowns players and officials have been subjected to identity theft, with the latest victim being Ghanaian international Rashied Sumalia. Left-back Punch Masenamela and Lebohang Mokoena have already had their cellphone simcards cloned three times each.
Other Sundowns victims include Teko Modise, Alex Shakoane, Elias Pelembe, Daniel Mudau, Trott Moloto, assistant coach Alex Bapela and Katlego Mphela.
Brazilians media officer Thulani Thuswa told KickOff.com this is a problem at the club.
“What happens is that when the simcards are cloned, people get access to the player’s or official’s phone details. These people then send messages to their relatives or people close to our employees saying that they are in trouble and are asking for money. This is a problem and we want to put an end to it,” Thuswa said.
Phone or simcard cloning is the transfer of identity from one cellular device to another.
Meanwhile, Safa have until 30 November to register Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United for next year’s African Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup respectively.
Chiefs gained entry to the first event courtesy of winning the Premiership last term, while Matsatsantsa booked their spot at the other tournament by reaching the Nedbank Cup Final where they went down to Amakhosi. The Glamour Boys had to pick one of the Caf competitions to do duty in after earning a ticket for both, hence United’s unconventional qualification for the Confederation Cup.
Both clubs, who have confirmed they will compete at the continental showpieces, must submit their provisional 30-man squads by December 31.
Safa posted a Caf communication on their official Facebook page, which read as follows: “All affiliated National Associations per the Interclubs Regulations have a deadline of 30th November 2013 to confirm their clubs’ engagements in the Caf Interclubs competitions (Orange Caf Champions League and Orange Caf Confederation Cup) for the season 2014.-Kickoff.
