INTERNATIONAL Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Secretary General Mr Jagan Chapagain has arrived in Zimbabwe for a high-level visit aimed at strengthening humanitarian partnerships and advancing community resilience.
During his visit, Mr Chapagain is expected to pay a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa at State House today before undertaking field visits on Saturday and ministerial engagements on Monday.
The visit comes as the IFRC, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and the Government continue to deepen collaboration in addressing humanitarian challenges, including climate change, health emergencies, migration and disaster preparedness.
IFRC Harare Country Cluster Delegation Head of Delegation Mr Kopano Masilo welcomed the visit, saying it reflected the organisation’s commitment to strengthening locally led humanitarian action.
“We are honoured to welcome IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain to Zimbabwe. His visit underscores our shared commitment with the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and the Government of Zimbabwe to strengthen humanitarian partnership, champion locally led action and invest in resilient communities,” said Mr Masilo.
“We look forward to building on this collaboration to better serve those who need us most.”
Mr Chapagain, who is based in Geneva, Switzerland, was appointed IFRC Secretary General in February 2020 after serving as Under Secretary General for Programmes and Operations, Chief of Staff and Regional Director for Asia Pacific.
His humanitarian journey began as a youth volunteer with the Nepal Red Cross, and throughout his career he has championed localisation, youth engagement, accountability and partnerships as key pillars of effective humanitarian action.
The IFRC is the world’s largest humanitarian network, working through National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support communities affected by disasters, health emergencies and other humanitarian crises.
