UTAKATAKA Express heir, Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo admitted that his father – Tongai Moyo’s boots were too big for him to fill after struggling to excite revellers during his performance at Manor Hotel in Bulawayo on Friday evening.
About 50 people attended the show and the detached audience stood motionless watching the Young Igwe perform. Peter, who took over his father’s Utakataka Express band three years ago, said he was not yet at his father’s level of performance as he was still building up his career.
“I cannot deny that I have not reached the level of my father in terms of performance and music. I believe that there is a long way to go as I have to work on my career. People should also understand that these things do not just come easily, you work for them. People do not know how long it took my father to come up with his first album. He worked hard to get to where he was and I believe my time is coming,” he said.
Asked how he was managing to keep the band intact, Moyo said Utakataka was being driven by their passion for the love of music.
“I always tell my guys that music is about passion. We have come a long way as a band and amazingly, we are getting along perfectly,” he said.
From afar one could have mistaken Peter for his father as he was clad in his late father’s traditional colours; a white pair of trousers, white jacket with red lining and red shoes. He also resembled his father; the looks, height and body movement.
He sang a number of his late father’s songs including Wachata, Handidi Navo, Kapuka Kanonzi Rudo, Gandaremvura and Samanyemba.
Fans were given an opportunity to join Moyo on stage to lead the Samanyemba song.
