ANTI-DRUG abuse champion Tryson Chimbetu says there is a lot of hope in the country’s fight against drugs and substance abuse.

The 35-year-old says he is now a living testimony that this fight can be won.

He shared his thoughts in Dzivaresekwa Extension last Saturday where he was one of the guest speakers and performers during an anti-drug and substance abuse campaign.

The Zimbabwe Network for Economic and Social Transformation Trust (Zinest) was behind the programme.

“I am now in a better space as compared to last year when I was fighting drug and substance abuse.

“I was living in my world after I became an addict but I would like to thank God.

“I have realised that we can conquer our demons if we are serious by undergoing rehabilitation as was the case with me.”

He added:

“It took a lot of sacrifice from a lot of people like Takemore Mazuruse of Zinest, my family members and other friends who made sure that I got rehabilitated.

“I am happy that I am the real Tryson after rehabilitation. I am ready to help others as an anti-drug champion. I also wish we could get more rehabilitation centres around Zimbabwe to save people who are suffering from addiction.”

Zinest founder and director Mazuruse hailed Tryson for opening up and vowed to assist others.

“We have joined hands with other organisations which are here to get to the core of the issues pushing our young people to indulge in drug and substance abuse.

“Today is just a launch of the idea but the hope is that beyond today, we continue empowering our young people, we continue coming to our communities, and we identify their talents.

“We have noted that some people indulge in drugs due to early marriages, gender-based violence and other issues that we are tackling today,” he said.

Guests at PaDziva Camp and Caravan were taught about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, early marriages as well as gender-based violence.

Teenagers showcased their martial arts skills, music and dance skills much to the delight of the huge crowd that attended.

Team Flag, City of Harare Social Welfare Department, Root Back, Togaraseyi Projects, Kamili Investments, Goldswift Construction, Ezeekleen Detergents, Esteem Communications and Root Backgraced graced the event.
