THE Imbizo Recruit Training Depot (RTD), a key institution in the training of Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) personnel, was established in 1995 to transform selected civilians into disciplined, patriotic and combat-ready general duty soldiers.

Before its establishment as an independent unit, the depot operated as a wing under the Zimbabwe School of Infantry at Mbalabala in Matabeleland South.

It was established at the then Llewellyn Barracks, now known as Imbizo Barracks, whose name pays tribute to King Lobengula’s renowned Imbizo Regiment, which fought against white settler forces during the 1893 conflict.

The regiment’s legacy of courage and resistance remains reflected in the depot’s identity and its emphasis on discipline, teamwork and military preparedness.

The depot’s emblem resembles a shield, traditionally a piece of defensive armour carried by a soldier. At the top of the shield is the Zimbabwe Bird, while an open book and an assegai occupy the centre. The motto, “Ibumba leButho”, is engraved at the bottom.

The emblem’s features symbolise the institution’s mission of imparting military knowledge and skills to selected civilians, moulding them into general duty soldiers ready to serve in infantry battalions.

The open book represents learning and the acquisition of military knowledge, while the assegai reflects the fighting role of the soldier. Together with the Zimbabwe Bird and the depot’s motto, the symbols embody the institution’s responsibility to prepare recruits for military service.

One of the depot’s principal objectives is to produce patriotic general duty soldiers capable of serving as riflemen in infantry battalions. By the end of their training, recruits are expected to have a sound understanding of fundamental military skills and the ability to deploy on military operations without requiring further basic training.

The training programme also seeks to instil personal qualities essential to military service, including loyalty, team spirit, discipline, self-respect, courage, resourcefulness, adaptability and respect for others.

Recruits are expected to maintain high standards of turnout and military bearing, reflecting the discipline and professionalism required of members of the ZNA.

On the practical side, trainees undergo instruction in foot and arms drill, the operation of personal and platoon weapons, map reading and navigation, as well as individual and team tactical manoeuvres.

Watermanship is another component of the training, equipping recruits with skills relevant to operating in water-related environments.

Beyond imparting technical military skills, the depot seeks to build recruits’ physical and mental resilience, preparing them to endure the hardships associated with military operations.

The training is designed to develop a sense of pride in serving as a Zimbabwe National Army soldier while instilling the discipline, cohesion and readiness required for service in an infantry unit.

Through its training mandate, Imbizo Recruit Training Depot continues to play a role in preparing new generations of soldiers to meet the demands of military service.
