ZVISHAVANE Social Soccer League secretary-general, Tavonga Matingwina, believes they have made strides in discouraging people from illegal mining.
The league is now the centre of attention in the mining town after the disappearance of Shabanie Mine from the country’s top-flight football landscape.
The Zvishavane social league has 18 teams, which have already played 20 games.
Noelvale Rovers top the league table, and are the only team yet to lose.
Former Premier Soccer League players who grace the league are Rowan Nenzou, Tarisai Rukanda, Smart Muchabaiwa, Brighton Pamhirwa, Cassidy Banda, Andifani Baluti, Brendon Phiri and Gerald Phiri.
“The league is quite competitive, there’s great talent in Zvishavane, and we are happy with the progress the league has made.
“Illegal mining has been the major problem in our communities.
“We have lost youths and the elderly to various diseases, drug abuse and tragedies when illegal mines collapse.
“Some of our teams train during the week before their weekend games.
“We are now appealing for sponsorship to take this initiative to another level,” said Matingwina.
Maglas, which was once the Shabanie Mine’s fortress, is now the stage of the weekly social league games.
Only FC Platinum and Loss Control remain as the professional sides in the mining town.
Loss Control play in the ZIFA Central Region Division One League, while FC Platinum are current leaders of the country’s top-flight league.
