THE inaugural Unity Day basketball tournament roars to life this afternoon at Richwood Park in Harare with 16 teams expected to take part. These include Bulawayo side Lakers, Mercenaries (Mutare), Unicorns from Gweru, Raiders, Vixens, Cameo, Arcabia Bucs, Cavaliers, Real Returners and Green Stars all from Harare.
Plaza Warriors of Namibia will make a guest appearance.
The tournament celebrates the life of the late former national team coach and basketball legend Ronald Garura.
Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) director Simon Lawson in an interview yesterday said the stage is set for the tournament.
“We have everything in place and the tournament starts tomorrow (today),” said Lawson.
The tournament was organised by former Cavaliers basketball players who played along Garura and BUZ in honour of one of the most celebrated basketball players.
“This will be an annual tournament, to remember what people like Garura did for basketball,” said Lawson.
Lawson said there are no monetary prizes for the tournament.
“Cavaliers basketball club have only provided medals for the tournament, there are plans to engage corporate world to sponsor the tournament next year,” said Lawason.
Garura is one of the most talented basketball point guards that ever emerged from Mashonaland and a renowned Zimbabwe basketball legend.
The former national team coach and Cavaliers basketball team legend died in 2012 in South Africa.
The final will be played on Unity Day.
