At least 200 athletes participated in the inaugural Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration and Management (ZIPAM) Half-Day Marathon and Fun Day in Darwendale recently.
Malcolm Gono (11) was the pick of the crop after he showed a clean pair of heels and came second in the 5km category in 17 minutes ahead of other contestants much older than him.
The event started with a send-off by Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo at 6 am amid calls for everyone to take wellness seriously.
“Wellness is a key component as we drive human capital and skills development of our human capital development towards the national Vision 2030,” said Minister Chombo.
“We are in Mashonaland West province for this exceptionally healthy day, running and wellness as ZIPAM promotes human capital development and wellness.”
The marathon brought together public servants, parastatal staff, families, athletics teams and the broader community.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister Mercy Dinha, who was the guest of honour, hailed ZIPAM for promoting health and wellness.
“ZIPAM, as a strategic Parastatal under the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, continues to demonstrate that leadership in the public sector extends beyond policy and training; it involves people-centred development, wellness, and inclusive participation,” she said.
The deputy minister said the Government has demonstrated commitment to a holistic approach to decent work, employee wellness, and public sector reform.
ZIPAM director-general Dr Nancy Matshe said the inaugural marathon was a success owing to the high turnout of athletes from various departments and the community.
“We have managed to provide a platform to promote wellness while also showcasing what ZIPAM as a training, accommodation facility with an ambient environment suitable can offer to tourism, private and government departments,” she said.
ZIPAM board chairperson Mrs Constance Chigwamba said the centre was undergoing a major upgrade.
