In a shocking incident at the Bulawayo Centre shopping mall in the Central Business District, a gay couple, Tatenda Ncube and Mondliwethu Ndlovu, were caught kissing, which sparked immediate mob justice from bystanders.
Eyewitnesses reported that the couple was brutally attacked by a group of individuals who took offense to their public display of affection.
The situation escalated when the police intervened, resulting in the arrest of Tatenda Ncube. Mondliwethu Ndlovu, however, managed to escape the scene before law enforcement could apprehend him.
A police spokesperson confirmed Ncube’s arrest but declined to provide further details, stating, “We can confirm that an individual was arrested in connection with an incident at Bulawayo Centre, but we cannot divulge any more information at this time.”
A relative of Ncube expressed deep concern for his safety following the arrest, stating, “We are extremely worried about Tatenda. We have been unable to reach him since he was taken by the police, and we fear for his well-being. It’s well-known that many people in the LGBTIQ+ community face serious risks to their safety if they openly identify as gay, and we are terrified for him.”
The incident has raised alarm among local activists who are advocating for the rights and protection of LGBTIQ+ individuals in Zimbabwe, where homosexuality is still criminalized.
As the community awaits more information regarding Ncube’s situation, calls for justice and protection for LGBTIQ+ individuals continue to grow louder.
