RURAL Women in Chipinge, a local lobby group in the district, has implored the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, Climate and Rural Development to include women in developmental efforts as a way of empowering them.
The group, which promotes women’s empowerment interests, met at Checheche yesterday, and discussed the need for women’s involvement in traditional leaders’ committees on land.
They called for a 50-50 representation, and participation of men and women in the committees.
This, they added, speaks to the country’s development agenda under National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) in pursuit of an upper-middle economy by 2030.
Rural Women in Chipinge also advocated for the promulgation of legislation that promotes joint and equal ownership of land between married spouses.
Ms Cynthia Gwenzi, a gender activist, said: “Land allocation must prioritise women as well because they are equally important. Men and women ought to enjoy the same land rights.”
