SEASONED jazz and Marabi maestro Jeys Marabini says Zimbabwe’s independence was earned through the “blood and sweat” of devoted liberators, urging the current generation to safeguard that legacy by building the nation on foundations of unity and appreciation.
The Ezinangeni hit maker made the remarks ahead of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, scheduled for 18 April at Maphisa Growth Point in Matobo District, Matabeleland South.

Marabini is among the artistes set to perform at the Independence Day gala at Minda High School grounds, which will follow the main commemorations and run from 6pm into the early hours. The extensive line up includes Sandra Ndebele, Clement Magwaza, Mavusani and the Chimurenga Vocalists, Dereck Mpofu, Andy Muridzo, LMG Choir, Mbare Chimurenga Choir, Zinjaziyamluma and Black Umfolosi. Also slated to perform are Ndolwane Super Sounds, Chief Hwenje, Khonangale, Indosakusa The Morning Star, Iyasa, Ma9Nine, Godolude, Bhadilah, Chase Skuza, Jah Master, Sasha, Bolamba Culture Birds, Sulumani Chimbetu, Ufasimba Home of Arts, DT Bio Mudimba and Dubia Masters.
Marabini, who hails from Filabusi and is a regular performer at national events, said he is honoured to be part of this year’s programme, particularly because the celebrations are being held in his home province.
He emphasised that independence came at a significant cost, placing a duty on all Zimbabweans to protect the country’s sovereignty while promoting unity and peace.
“I’m grateful to be part of the gala in Maphisa, performing on home ground makes it even more special. As we commemorate Zimbabwe’s Independence Day, we’re reminded that our freedom came at a great cost. It’s a day of pride, but also one of reflection to honour the brave souls who sacrificed their lives so that we may live in a free nation,” Marabini said.
He said that for Zimbabweans, Independence Day should remain a moment to reflect on the courage and sacrifices that shaped the nation.
“We must never forget our heroes and heroines, our loved ones, and all those who stood with courage during the struggle. Their sacrifices are the foundation of the Zimbabwe we know today. We have to carry their legacy forward by staying united, valuing our freedom, and building a future that reflects the dreams they fought for.”
