BULAWAYO motorsport enthusiasts are in for an adrenaline-pumping experience this Independence Day, as ZKS Spinners Arena hosts a high-octane car spinning and drag event on 18 April, to mark Zimbabwe’s 45th Independence anniversary.

The event will feature an impressive line-up of top spinners, including Amakhosi, Mac D, Ben, AK47, Mavusane (The Rock), Sbahle, Mastanda, Savior, Mahogan, Dirty Boys, Bhova, Santos (Zambia), as well as Kutja and King Kruger from South Africa. To raise the stakes, the best spinner of the day will walk away with a cash prize of US$1 000.
ZKS Spinners Arena proprietor, Zakhele Mlilo, confirmed that preparations for the event are well underway to ensure a seamless celebration.

“Independence Day is a time to reflect on our culture, heritage, unity and the struggles that won us our freedom. These are the same values we uphold at ZKS, bringing people together to celebrate spinning as an authentic sport in Bulawayo,” said Mlilo.

“Many people overlook the importance of this day, so we’re giving them a reason to commemorate it while enjoying a sport they love with their families. Our team has been working tirelessly to ensure everything is in place, and we are actively spreading the word so that no one is left behind.”

For years, car spinning was viewed with scepticism, often associated with crime and societal ills. However, ZKS Spinners Arena has been at the forefront of changing this perception, engaging communities to embrace spinning as a legitimate motorsport.

To nurture fresh talent, the arena has introduced free weekend practice sessions for amateurs, welcoming all car enthusiasts who wish to learn the art of spinning.

“I truly appreciate the unwavering support from spinning lovers. Thanks to their contributions, ZKS has grown tremendously, and we continue to make physical improvements to the venue,” Mlilo said.

He urged the Bulawayo community to rally behind the sport, saying local endorsement is crucial for its recognition and growth.

“As we celebrate Independence Day, let us also honour the sacrifices of our fallen heroes who fought for our freedom.

Today, we enjoy many privileges, including the ability to pursue motorsport, thanks to their bravery,” he said.

Hosting the burnouts on such a significant national day underscores ZKS Spinners Arena’s commitment to celebrating freedom while cementing spinning as a vital part of Bulawayo’s culture and identity.
