WITH the country counting down to this year’s Independence Day celebrations, attention has once again turned to the Independence Gala — a national platform that continues to shape and transform artistic careers.
For many artistes, the gala is far more than just a performance stage; it has become a launchpad for new opportunities. Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts (Iyasa) director Nkululeko Dube says the platform has, over the years, proved to be a game changer, particularly for emerging talent.
“Performing at the Independence Gala is a career defining moment for young artistes as the platform usually opens doors and breakthrough opportunities,” said Dube in an interview.
With over 25 years in the creative industry, Dube said being part of the national celebrations remains a significant experience for Iyasa, a group that has become synonymous with excellence on major stages.
“Iyasa has been a proud and regular feature at the national independence celebrations since our inception in 2001. Over more than two decades, we’ve graced stages across the country as part of this historic annual event. We may have missed a few along the way, but our presence at the Independence Gala has been a consistent thread in our story, one we wear with immense pride,” he said.
Dube highlighted that national platforms such as the Independence Gala have the power to transform careers by exposing artistes to diverse audiences. “When you perform at an event of this magnitude, you step onto a national pedestal, your work reaches audiences from every corner of Zimbabwe, communities that may never have encountered you otherwise. It is not just a performance; it is an introduction, a statement, a declaration of your artistry to the whole country,” he said.
He described the selection to perform at the gala as both an honour and a validation of the group’s enduring impact in the arts sector.
“To be chosen to perform at the Independence Gala is always an honour, not just for Iyasa as an institution, but for every young artiste who has poured their heart into this craft under our roof. Sharing a stage with Zimbabwe’s finest entertainers on a night that belongs to the entire nation is something that never gets old.”
He added that the group views its inclusion as affirmation that its work continues to resonate with audiences across the country.
“This shows that our creativity resonates and that excellence speaks for itself. We approach every selection with immense gratitude and even greater enthusiasm.”
As anticipation builds ahead of the celebrations, Dube assured fans that Iyasa will deliver a polished and powerful performance befitting the national occasion.
“Anything less than extraordinary would not be Iyasa. Our fans know us; they know we don’t walk onto any stage unprepared. We invest deeply in every performance: the choreography, the music, the storytelling, the energy.
“This year will be no different. Expect the fire, the precision, the soul and the magic that has defined us for over 25 years. Come ready to be moved, because we certainly will be bringing everything we have,” said Dube.
With preparations now at an advanced stage, all eyes are on the Independence Gala set for Saturday at Minda High School grounds in Matobo District, Matabeleland South province.
