THE 24th edition of the Independence Trophy horse racing day will take place at Borrowdale on Sunday.
In April 1990 the first event was held and it has stayed a permanent fixture on the horse racing betting calendar.  It celebrates Zimbabwe’s independence attained in 1980.
The Mashonaland Turf Club (MTC) in charity work through the Original Genuine Lotto organises the day’s proceedings.

MTC have been able to change lives of many less privileged members of society, through charity disbursements worth $2,131 million since dollarisation and jackpot payouts worth $1,645 million to 123 winners.

In 1992 when the Independence Floating Trophy was first issued three years into the Independence Trophy race day running, it was presented to trainer Ginger Halfpenny who had won the race with Crown Consort for owners Mr and Mrs L J van Niekerk. The horse was ridden to victory by Robert Moore who became the first winning combination to be engraved on the trophy.

The race has developed through the years and in 1999 the Genuine Original Lotto was born and since then the proceeds of this game have been channelled towards charity.

Conditions of the race in which weights to be carried by horses are determined by the number of wins since the last running of the same race, encourages favourable running conditions for the highly rated horses hence classy and competitive horses take part.

The field for this Sunday’s Independency Trophy race comprise a decent 10 classy horses to battle it out to the finish.
