The commemorations will be held on Thursday next week.
When The Herald visited the National Sports Stadium in Harare, the venue for the main celebration yesterday, school children and members of the uniformed forces were going through their drills.
Harare acting Governor Alfred Tome said this year’s celebrations would be held under the theme: ‘Zimbabwe @ 33 — Peace, Prosperity and Economic Empowerment for National Development’.
“Preparations are at a very advanced stage and we have been furnished with the theme,” he said.
“Rehearsals started a few days ago and the mobilisation teams are working hard to ensure that thousands of people attend the celebrations.”
Acting Governor Tome said the only challenge they were facing was transport.
“We have been given 13 buses with a carrying capacity of 60 people instead of the usual 40 buses and this is an area we are still working on to ensure we have adequate transport,” he said.

“We urge those with buses and private vehicles to assist us because we want as many people as possible to be at the venue.”
He said there would be a lot of entertainment at the Stadium starting in the morning.
“We have lined up a lot of entertainment and musicians such as Alick Macheso and Sulumani Chimbetu will be performing,” he said.
“There will also be a soccer match that involves big teams that are in the Premier Soccer League and the semi-finals will be played this weekend in Harare and Bulawayo.”
He said Zimbabweans should bury their differences and celebrate the day in style.
“This is not about (political) party A or B. It’s a day for all of us to celebrate because we are all enjoying the independence that was brought by our sons and daughters who fought in the liberation struggle,” he said.
“Differences aside and let us become one and enjoy our day.”
Teams set up in different provinces said they were working hard to make the event a success.
All provincial capitals would commemorate the event that would be presided over by provincial governors and resident ministers for provinces.
The resident ministers are also expected to read President Mugabe’s speech.
The main event would be in Harare where thousands of people are expected to converge at the National Sports Stadium.
