adminThe Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Mr Killian Mpingo, yesterday said the theme was still to be agreed upon.
“Cabinet has not yet finalised on that,” he said. “What we are doing as a ministry is to mobilise. We are still waiting to be told by the Office of the President and Cabinet on the approval of the theme.”
Mr Mpingo said the preparations were proceeding well.
Rehearsals are being carried out in various parts of the country, with members of the armed forces and school children going through their drills.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo, who chairs the organising task force, on Monday said everything was on course for the big event.
He said teams set up in different provinces were working hard to make the event a success.
All provincial capitals would commemorate the event that would be presided over by provincial governors and resident ministers for provinces.
The resident ministers are also expected to read President Mugabe’s speech.
The main event would be in Harare where thousands of people are expected to converge at the National Sports Stadium.
People are expected to be treated to various displays and entertainment by various groups.
Traditionally, the Zimbabwe National Army and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have been major attractions at the mega event in the capital, with helicopter displays reminiscent of war situations.
The police have another drawcard with their dogs displays.
