Indian Ambassador Vijay Khanduja has said that his country and Zimbabwe share strong cordial relations which date back to the 18th century.

Speaking at the celebrations of the 75th Indian Independence held virtually, Ambassador Kanduja said relations between the two countries have evolved and will continue to strengthen despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

“India and Zimbabwe enjoy a friendly and cordial relationship be it political, economic, commercial, people to people contacts, the relationship is dynamic and evolving,” he said.

“Our links go back to historical times. India stood with Zimbabwe during its freedom struggle. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, India stood with Zimbabwe by gifting Covaxin vaccines, ambulances, medicines and rice. India and Zimbabwe also collaborate at multi-lateral fora.

“Zimbabwe supported India-South Africa’s proposal for IP waiver on vaccines for treatment of COVID-19 at the WTO. India has also provided US$ 1 million through World Food Programme from India-UN Development Fund for Zimbabwe,” said Ambassador Khanduja.

He applauded Zimbabwean youths, under the Teen Rescue Mission, an organisation that works with teens and youths in fighting against drug and substance abuse and teenage pregnancies who participated in the celebrations.

The director of Teen Rescue Mission Mr Abraham Matuka thanked Ambassador Khanduja for honouring the youths by allowing them to be part of their celebrations.

“The opportunity brought joy to the young people and this helped us as an organisation to speak against drugs, early pregnancies and crime. These levels can only be reached by teens and young people with a sober mind,” he said.
