craft artiste Sangaru Sandeep has a career spanning over two decades and to date has scaled heights with his enticing designs.
The multi-disciplinary Sandeep explores different mediums and materials to give them a new look.
Currently, Sandeep is in the country working with the locals on designing and equipping them with new skills.
“I am happy to be in Zimbabwe. Recently I got involved in designing and training two groups from Honde Valley specialising in bamboo weaving and another in Masvingo area that focuses on sisal baskets,” said the artiste.
The 37-year-old genius is a holder of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering but shifted focus to do a postgraduate in Industrial Design specialising in Furniture Design from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, India, in 1996-99.
“After graduating in NID, I joined a collaborative endeavour to form a special effects design house called Digital Force. Thereafter, I started working for the Indian film and entertainment industry from 1999 to 2002. During the period I worked on various projects in special effects, production design, product development and design in the area of camera and production rigs,” he said.
Besides, Sandeep with his vast knowledge and ideas also worked as an assistant cinematographer in 2002 to 2004 when he joined NID, Ahmedabad.
“During the time, I was part of the core team to formulate the new postgraduate program in lifestyle accessory design, which became the core faculty to be visited to by various design schools in India,” said the artiste.
In 2004, Sandeep founded the “Sangaru Design Studio” working with Craft design, furniture, industrial, photography, documentary, filmmaking and special effects production designs.
Sandeep said, “Craft has always been a need based process from ages and using design to interface the skills of the artisans is something I want to work towards.”
The charming, pint-sized artiste said he enjoys teaching. Sandeep said he has fallen in love with photography and filmmaking and tries to create an opportunity to explore these mediums to document the fascinating “Way of Life” in different regions.
