A team of 27 multi-disciplinary Indian doctors and volunteers arrived in Zimbabwe on Sunday on a mission to offer free treatment to the disadvantaged in Manicaland Province.The team comprises 19 doctors and eight assistants. They are operating under the banner “rotary medicare project”.
Head of delegation Mr Rajendra Saboo said the team would provide services ranging from gynaecological, dentistry, general surgery, optometry to eye surgeries.
“We have not only come to offer sophisticated surgeries to the people of Zimbabwe but also to teach and share experiences with local doctors on use of modern technology,” said Mr Saboo.
Project advisor and pathologist Dr Rajiv Pradhan said they were looking forward to assisting close to 900 patients.
The team brought its own equipment and medicines.
The mission will run from May 5 to 13. Manicaland provincial medical director Dr Patron Mafaune said they started screening for patients in April in preparation for the medical camp. She said about 900 patients had been screened and are scheduled to get treatment from the team.
The team will operate from Sakubva Clinic, Mutare General Hospital and Nyanga District Hospital.
This visit by the doctors followed an appeal by Rotary Club Manicaland after noticing the need for medical assistance in the province. The team has performed over 55 000 surgeries across Africa.
