adminTHE Indian government recognised esports in the category of “multi-sports events” with many in the esports and gaming industry hailing the move.
Even Krafton Inc. India CEO, Sean Hyunil Sohn, lauded the move and assured that the company would be a part of the esports scene in India.
“This is a pathbreaking move by the government and we are delighted to see the recognition given to esports as part of multi-sports events by the Government of India,” Sohn wrote in a LinkedIn post.
“It is a testament to India’s commitment of making their mark in the global gaming ecosystem. This official acknowledgement will go a long way in boosting job creation, creating new business opportunities, and opening new avenues for the youth to realise their potential.
“We look forward to seeing esports further integrated in competitive gaming and we as Krafton are confident to play our part in furthering the vision of a thriving gaming ecosystem in India.”
Krafton’s battle royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India popularly known as BGMI was banned from the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store in July 2022. The Indian government issued an order to ban the game citing “national security concerns”.
This is likely due to the fact that Tencent partially owns Krafton. The company had launched the Indian version of PUBG Mobile after it too got banned by the government in 2020. – IGN India.
