AN Indian national allegedly caught with 7,7kg of heroin on Sunday at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while leaving the country appeared in court yesterday on charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs.
Nabin Chandra (61) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi, was remanded in custody.
Chandra was arrested by detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics after an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer manning the screening point told them that there was a checked-in navy blue bag with suspicious contents.
It is the State’s case that the detectives went to the screening point, and Chandra, who had already finished his check-in formalities to board an Ethiopian Airlines plane on his way to India, was summoned to the scanning point.
Chandra was informed about the searches and the navy blue bag tagged with his name was opened in his presence, leading to the recovery and seizure of heroin precisely stuffed in the lining of the bottom of the bag.
Chandra was arrested and it was established that he was an Indian citizen with a passport bearing number Z3626469 and an air ticket to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, en-route to India.
The drug was also weighed in his presence and it recorded 7,7kg, with an estimated street value of $6 160 000.
