INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated two significant infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
These projects are the Chenab Bridge, which is the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge. The event, which took place on June 6, marks a transformative step in enhancing regional connectivity and socio-economic development.
The inauguration comes as part of ongoing efforts to bolster infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Historically, the region has faced challenges in connectivity due to its rugged terrain.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which includes these bridges, aims to create a seamless rail network that connects the remote areas of the region to the rest of India.
The Chenab Bridge stands at 359 metres above the Chenab River, making it the highest railway arch bridge in the world.
It is designed to withstand extreme seismic and wind conditions, ensuring safety and durability. On the other hand, the Anji Bridge is specifically engineered for the challenging terrain of the region, promising improved transit and accessibility.
The completion of these bridges is expected to have a profound impact on the region. Enhanced connectivity will reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar to just three hours with the introduction of the Vande Bharat train.
Improved infrastructure is likely to attract more tourists, boosting the local economy. In addition, these projects are anticipated to generate numerous employment opportunities, contributing to economic stability.
During his visit, PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for various road widening projects and inaugurated flyover projects at Sangrama Junction and Bemina Junction.
These initiatives aim to alleviate traffic congestion and improve overall traffic flow. Further, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra will serve as the first medical college in Reasi district, significantly enhancing the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
The Indian government’s commitment to improving connectivity and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir is evident in these recent developments. PM Modi’s visit underscores a pivotal milestone in the region’s journey towards enhanced quality of life, economic growth, and greater integration with the rest of India.
