THE Ministry of Health and Child Care has launched an Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) programme in preparation for the malaria season, which runs from November to May.

The programme is being carried out in 22 high-malaria transmission districts, aiming to protect 3.2 million people.

The ministry revealed that there were 1 082 malaria cases and two deaths from the disease recorded last week.

The deaths were recorded in Murehwa and Nyanga districts.

The provinces of Manicaland, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West, Matabeleland North and Masvingo reported the highest number of cases.

Zimbabwe has already registered 149 699 malaria cases this year, with 242 deaths.

Of the reported cases, 140 were in children under the age of five.

Mashonaland East had 319 cases and Mashonaland Central (313).
