THE Ministry of Industry and Commerce has called for the establishment of industrial parks across Matabeleland South to unlock investment, create jobs and boost the province’s economic output.
Speaking at a high-level business breakfast meeting in Beitbridge, the ministry’s Acting Deputy Director for Matabeleland South, Ms Lavender Ncube, said the province needed to leverage its strategic location and other competitive advantages to accelerate industrialisation and local economic development.
The meeting is being hosted by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Albert Nguluvhe, in partnership with Beitbridge Municipality and Beitbridge Rural District Council.
Ms Ncube said industrial parks would provide affordable working space for small and medium enterprises while creating an enabling environment for value addition, manufacturing and investment.
She urged local authorities, the private sector and entrepreneurs to collaborate in identifying suitable land and developing infrastructure for industrial parks, particularly along strategic economic corridors such as Beitbridge.
“The development of industrial parks will provide affordable working spaces for small to medium enterprises, enhance productivity and attract both domestic and foreign direct investment into the province,” she said.
Ms Ncube said Zimbabweans should also take advantage of the 21 sectors reserved for local businesses to strengthen domestic value chains and create employment.
She said Beitbridge, given its position as a major regional trade and transport corridor, was particularly well placed to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“For Beitbridge, the AfCFTA is an advantage for them considering the rules of origin and zero tariff provisions,” said Ms Ncube.
She said industrialisation was central to the attainment of Vision 2030, with Matabeleland South expected to contribute to national economic growth through manufacturing, value addition and export-led production.
The business breakfast has brought together Government officials, business leaders, SMEs and exhibitors to explore partnerships, investment opportunities and strategies for inclusive economic growth in Beitbridge District.
