A YEAR-OLD infant from Masvingo’s Rujeko suburb drowned in a shallow well situated in a garden while playing with a neighbour, police confirmed yesterday.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 2pm. He identified the boy as Tadiwanashe Mhike of Nzungu Street, Rujeko C.Insp Zhanero said the boy’s mother, Tsitsi Makombe, 21, went to Rovambira Street in Rujeko B in the company of her son, Tadiwanashe, to do a piece job.

According to residents, after finishing her chores, Makombe got into the bathroom where she took a bath.

While she was bathing, Tadiwanashe went outside to play with another boy, 2, on the verandah. “Tadiwanashe and the other boy then proceeded to the garden where on arrival, they went to a shallow well intending to fetch water. When they reached it, Tadiwanashe slipped and fell in and drowned,” said a resident who asked not to be named.

Another resident said a neighbour rushed to the scene and retrieved the boy’s body which was already floating.

Insp Zhanero said Tadiwanashe’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
