A girls hostel at Mauya Secondary School in Hurungwe was destroyed by fire over the weekend leaving 40 pupils stranded. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire could have been started by an iron left on by one of the pupils after a power cut.
The fire destroyed the entire hostel at the Seventh Day Adventist-run school outside Karoi, leaving pupils with only the clothes they were wearing.
Pupils no longer have clothes, toiletries and other items they kept in the hostel, making the situation dire, said a source.
There were no injuries reported as the incident took place while pupils were at the dining hall having their supper.
Acting provincial education director Mr Gabriel Mhuma confirmed the incident adding that investigations into the actual cause of the fire are still underway.
“A fire broke out at Mauya Primary School and authorities are still carrying out investigations into the real cause of the fire which destroyed the whole hostel,” said Mr Mhuma.
“The District Civil Protection Unit led by the district administrator is expected to visit the school to make an assessment of the extent of damage and what might be needed to assist the children who have obviously been affected by the turn of events,” said a member of the committee.
