BULAWAYO born rugby star Michael Williams has been sidelined for three months after breaking his arm while turning out for his English Premiership side Leicester Tigers.
Williams, who signed for the Tigers at the beginning of this year, broke his arm in the first half against his former club Worcester Warriors.
Reports from the United Kingdom indicate that the 24-year-old lock forward underwent surgery which will rule him out of action for three months.
Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill is quoted in the Leicester Mercury describing Williams as having an incredible approach to the game.
“He has been great for us, he made a tackle and instead of going down he got back into the defensive line — I don’t know whether he is daft or brave! But it just shows that his attitude is fantastic,’’ said Cockerill.
The Tigers boss told the same publication that he believes that had Williams not been struck down by injury and continued with the form he had shown, he could have found himself being considered for England selection for the annual Six Nations whose 2016 edition is set for February.
Despite being born in Bulawayo and doing his education at Petra Primary and Christian Brothers College, Williams qualifies to play for England through his English grandfather.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe national fifteens rugby team hooker Royal Mwale has joined Rugby Union Almeria in France. The 26-year-old forward, a product of Falcon College in Esigodini made his debut for his Honour Division B club and scored two tries against Atletico Portuense.
Mwale left South Africa where he has been based for years fulfilling a long term ambition to play in Europe.
Mwale’s aim is to break into a better European league like the French Top 14 which is believed to be the highest paying club rugby competition in the world.
“I left South Africa because I have always wanted to play in Europe for a while now. My goal is to play in the French Top 14, this is a good start I have one foot in, wiser no, mature yes, not old I just reached my peak,’’ said Mwale.
A former national Under-19 player, Mwale has been playing club rugby in South Africa for years, his latest club being College Rovers in Durban where he spent one season. He initially turned out for Wits University and Durban Collegians.
Mwale becomes the second Zimbabwean to make it at a Spanish club this season after lock Jan Ferreira joined Aparejadores in August.
