EVERY summer, new trends emerge on Instagram that go strong for the months and then sputter and die extremely quickly. Sometimes they come back months later, but usually they disappear completely. These trends are always pleasing in that they make for a great photo, but they also tend to be so over-the-top that they can look a little too obvious for real life.

This year, most of those trends have pretty much died out, and, predictably, new ones have taken their place. You are guaranteed to see at least one of these things every single time you check your Instagram, especially if you follow a lot of fashion and/or beauty bloggers.

Squiggle brows

It’s been a crazy year in the beauty world. We have seen Instagram eyebrows, unicorn make-up and rainbow hair, but there’s a new eyebrow trend that’s hitting it big on social media at the moment, and it’s arguably the strangest one yet. For some reason, unbeknown to us, bloggers and amateur make-up artists have been painting their brows into waves above their eyes, and the finished look is UNIQUE.

Though it might look a little silly, it takes quite a while and some form of skill to perfect this trend. First, you have to create the wavy shape using washable glue (because you don’t really want to permanently pluck them into squiggles!), colour them in, and then intricately paint on concealer to give the squiggles defined edges. And, the look wouldn’t be complete without matching lips. Says the experts on YouTube.
Squiggle lips

As if the squiggle brow isn’t enough, we introduce the squiggle lip. The squiggle lip was first shared by a YouTuber Lexington, who posted a FaceTuned image of her lips on Instagram with the caption, “new trend alert!” Numerous people have then started sharing their wavy lips on their own social media pages and accentuated the look with bright lipsticks and liners. While some are clearly Photoshopped, others have used clever tricks with make-up and concealer to pull it off. Not everyone is a fan of the look however, and took to Twitter to share their stunned reaction.

Rose Tinted Sunglasses

Tinted or coloured sunglasses are super popular this year — they’re kind of vintage looking and round is the preferred shape — and that’s especially true for rose-tinted sunglasses. Pink garden rose sunglasses are in, serving to confirm that life is to be lived looking through rose-tinted glasses after all.

Off The Shoulder Tops

The only clothing item you might see more than striped clothes is off the shoulder clothes. Off the shoulder tops and dresses are almost as huge as stripes this year, and it’s clear — ladies are pretty into this trend. The off-the-shoulder neckline has been popular with the world’s most stylish women for decades. Shoulder-baring is sexy without being obvious; chic without being attention-grabbing.

Shoefies

You’ve heard the phrase, “the shoes maketh the man”, and it seems the shoes maketh the coolest Instagram pics, too. Forget selfies, SHOEFIES — taking a snap of the shoes you’re wearing — are the latest trend to hit Instagram, with accounts such as @ihavethisthingwithfloors setting the trend for IG addicts and fashionistas to showcase their stylish footwear. The best shoefies are the ones that show off a little more than the hot heels you’re wearing, but also the fab floor or an exotic destination.
