THE annual Southern Region Inter-Formation/Units Zonal Sports competition kicked off this week amidst much excitement and fanfare.
Throughout the entire week, participants from seven inter-formations/units will compete in various sports such as football, netball, volleyball, chess, darts, tug of war, handball and table tennis at the United College of Education and at HQ 1 Infantry Brigade, Khumalo Barracks in Bulawayo.
With over 800 participants representing their respective units, the competition promises to be fierce, but also a great opportunity for participants to showcase their skill and sportsmanship.
The participating units are 1 Infantry Brigade, 4 Infantry Brigade, 5 Infantry Brigade, Presidential Guard, Para Regiments, Air Defence and Bulawayo District.
Brigadier-General George Chitsva, Commander 1 Infantry Brigade, was the Guest of Honour at the official opening ceremony of the tournament. In his opening remarks, he encouraged the participants to strive for excellence in their respective disciplines while also building strong and lasting relationships with their fellow competitors.
“During the five good days, let us all foster oneness, build lasting relationships and celebrate our shared commitment to excellence. I implore all umpires to apply themselves fairly, firmly, impartially and consistently during competitions. I also urge everyone to play their role for the competition to be a success. I remind all participants and officials to observe all rules and regulations of the games.
“To our event organisers and support staff, your tireless efforts have made this event possible. This sporting extravaganza brings together the cream of our military’s athletic talent, promoting unity, sportsmanship and excellence. As we compete in this thrilling competition, let’s not forget the values that bind us in soldiering, that is discipline and resilience,” said Brig-Gen Chitsva.
He also encouraged competitors to shun drugs and substances.
“I urge all officers, men and women to be disciplined, to refrain from drugs and substance abuse and above all, fraternisation during the competitions,” he said.
Winners across the various sporting disciplines will advance to the national finals between the Northern and Southern Regions set for November 11 to 15.
As the week progresses, spectators can look forward to some thrilling matches and displays of athleticism as the different units battle it out for top honours.
