REGISTRATION to participate at the second edition of the Zimbabwe International Carnival slated for Harare in May has started.
A carnival is characterised by celebrations and entertainment with performances from different artistes, an array of international food dishes and a family fun-day, among other activities.
It is a public street party that has some elements of an agricultural show, but only better and it seeks to promote tourism through cultural diversity.
People dress up in the most outrageous costumes, take to the streets, join thousands others and dance to loud music like no one is watching.
The Zimbabwe Tourism launched the first edition of the annual event in May last year.
“Registration is now open for the Zimbabwe International Carnival to be held from May 16 to 24,” said ZTA.
Efforts to get a comment from the authority’s chief executive Karikoga Kaseke and the head of public relations and corporate communications Sugar Chagonda were fruitless as their mobile numbers were not reachable.
In 2013, the tourism authority introduced the first grand scale cultural carnival that attracted performers and exhibitors from across the world saying carnival was a good way of promoting unity among organisations, governments and private companies.
It is hoped that carnivals have a potential to bring more exposure to Zimbabwe as many countries will come on board to experience what the country has to offer.
The Zimbabwe International Carnival is being held in May because the month is an off peak season for the hospitality industry and thus it is believed that hosting such an event during that time of the year would bring business as tourists will occupy hotel rooms.
The International Carnival de Victoria in Seychelles held last year was a learning curve for ZTA that the country anchored on to successfully host the first edition of the carnival in Harare.
