THE Organ for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration (ONHRI) has donated 18 bins to Bulawayo City Council as a build up to the International Day of Peace commemorations. The belated commemorations for the International Day of Peace will be held tomorrow at a Bulawayo hotel.

On Tuesday, the organisation with the civic society, gathered at Basch Street Terminus popularly known as Egodini before setting up a billboard urging members of the public to promote peace in all their activities.

Speaking during the launch of the programme, Minister of State for Bulawayo Province, Cde Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo urged parents to instill good behaviour in youths.

“The theme for the 2013 International Day of Peace is “Education for Peace.” The United Nations Secretary-General therefore urges us to teach our children the value of tolerance and mutual respect. Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair and inclusive world that embraces diversity. Let us fight for peace and defend it with all our might,” said Cde Moyo.

She said residents should come up with ideas to intensify community building.
“This gathering to clean our terminus and launch the billboard provides a powerful and inspiring opportunity to engage Zimbabweans from all walks of life and organisations to participate in diverse activities that are related to envisioning peace, developing awareness and making a positive difference towards peace. Parents should also stop fighting in front of children as this promotes violent behaviour which hinders peace in the home and in the community,” she said.

Speaking during the same occasion ONHRI principal director Mrs Sibusisiwe Zembe called on residents to desist from throwing litter in public places.

“People should stop littering in this terminus and other public places.  We are hopeful that these bins will help the council in managing waste collection and that residents will make use of them and avoid littering. Children should also be taught from home that throwing litter around is a sign of irresponsibility,” said Mrs Zembe.
