Five musicians from five countries will tour Zimbabwe and Zambia next month as part of a cross-cultural initiative called “Frank Salis Experience – The Zambezi Sessions.”
Led by Swiss Hammond organist Frank Salis, the project will run as a two-week residency combining rehearsals, public concerts and workshops in schools and cultural centres.
The line-up includes Salis (Switzerland) on Hammond keyboard, Alex Wasily (USA) on trombone, Max Covini (Italy, based in Zimbabwe) on drums, Mr Chanx (Zambia) on guitar and Zimbabwean vocalist Theresa Muteta.
Concerts in Harare and Bulawayo have been confirmed as official events of the Zimbabwe Jazz Festival, one of the country’s largest annual music gatherings.
Alliance Française Harare director Fanny Gauthier said the project was designed to build connections across cultures.
“The Zambezi Sessions is a testament to the power of collaboration. This project is more than just a musical tour; it is an opportunity to create a shared experience, celebrate our differences and connect through the rhythms of jazz.”
The initiative is supported by several international partners, including the Embassy of France in Zimbabwe, the Embassy of Switzerland to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, the Embassy of Italy, the US Embassy in Harare and the Alliance Française network in Harare, Bulawayo and Lusaka.
Organisers said the workshops would focus on engaging young musicians and providing them with opportunities to learn from the international artists.
The Zambezi Sessions begin in September, with dates and venues expected to be announced soon.
