Good times roll for ZSE, as new listings beckon

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) is bullish about its prospects amid sustained growth in quoted investments and performance, which now include real estate investment trusts (REITs) and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

The innovations are aimed at broadening investor participation and deepening market engagement.

Despite tight liquidity across the broader economy, the exchange has recorded notable growth.

According to the chief executive officer, Mr Justin Bgoni, turnover for the first half of 2025 doubled compared to the same period in 2024.

The trend spilled into July, which saw record turnover since the introduction of its electronic trading platform.

While liquidity constraints continue to temper sustained gains, Mr Bgoni told ZTN Prime’s Beat the Market that the current trend is much better than most people are seeing.

The Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFX), a subsidiary of the ZSE, which was historically characterised by low trading volumes, is also experiencing an uptick.

Mr Bgoni emphasised the importance of diversification; “If I sell my shares in one company, I need to be able to get into another one. So, if there is not much diversity, I will not sell.”

The first half of 2025 shows VFX trading tripled in value compared to the same period in 2024, demonstrating that increased listings are directly supporting liquidity.

Investors who previously held VFX shares as stable US dollar-denominated assets are now more willing to trade, reflecting growing confidence in the market’s depth.

Looking ahead, the VFX anticipates additional listings.
