BASKETBALL Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) secretary-general Ignatius Yesaya says the inclusion of international referees at the ongoing National Club Championships has significantly improved the standard of officiating, giving local players and coaches a taste of elite-level basketball management.

Speaking on the sidelines of the tournament, Yesaya said bringing in internationally accredited officials has not only enhanced the quality of matches but also created a valuable learning platform for local referees.

“The presence of international referees has really helped raise the bar in terms of officiating at this year’s championships,” said Yesaya.

“They bring experience, professionalism and a deeper understanding of the modern game, which is important for our players, coaches and even our local officials. This exposure is critical if we are to grow basketball in Zimbabwe.”

The championships, which have drawn top clubs from across the country, have already produced exciting contests, with teams battling for places in the knockout stages.

Yesaya believes the improved officiating has ensured fair competition while also increasing confidence among participating teams.

“When players know games are being handled at a high standard, it improves discipline and the overall quality of competition. Our local referees are also benefiting immensely by observing and working alongside these international officials,” he said.
