The Lotteries and Gaming Board (LGB) has warned the public not to engage in internet betting, lotteries and gaming activities as this was illegal. The Betting and Totalisator Control Act Chapter 10:02 stipulates that betting by licensed bookmakers is done in prescribed areas, gaming rooms and race courses.“Please note that there are no internet bookmakers, lottery, totalisator, casino licensees in Zimbabwe,” said LGB in a statement on Thurs- day.
“Therefore, members of the public, banks and other financial intermediaries ought to be vigilant and report any such activities to the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Lotteries and Gaming Board for law enforce- ment.”
LGB said in terms of Section 34 of the Act, police had the right to “ask for totalisator or bookmakers licence on grounds of suspicion, enter on any race course or motor race course or other place whatever and make such seizure of articles thereon as will secure evidence of the commission of such offense or subsection”.
According to the Lotteries and Gaming Act Chapter 10:26, except in accordance with the terms and conditions of a licence, no person shall establish, manage or conduct a lottery or sell or dispose of, a ticket in a lottery or in any manner advertise a lottery.
“No person shall knowingly permit any place under his control to be used for the management or conduct of a lottery, of take purchase or possess or have any interest in a ticket in a lottery, unless the lottery is licensed under the said Act.”
The Act also forbids anyone to organise, manage or conduct any game, or the installation and playing of games at any place without a license.
“It is illegal for anyone to allow any game to be played at or in any place under his control or permit a gaming device to be installed at or in any place under his control,” said LGB.
