THE Intwasa Festival of Arts has started preparations for the annual fete held in September annually by launching a number of its supporting programmes. The festival has kick-started its literary competition, which seeks to promote Zimbabwean narratives from unheralded writers.
The literary event launched concurrently with the festival 10 years ago was named after Bulawayo’s literature guru, the late Dr Yvonne Vera in 2011 and seeks to promote original creative writing talent in English. Entries are expected from all over the country and the Diaspora.
The competition is open to all writers who can explore their writing and there are no given topics.
All works should be original and unpublished for them to meet the entry requirements. Each writer is allowed one entry and the story must be a maximum of 3,000 words.
Only the short-listed candidates will be personally notified and winners will be announced during the festival in September.
The Intwasa Short Story Competition is one of the very few literary writing competitions in Zimbabwe and continues to encourage and promote the original Zimbabwean narrative.
Last year, the competition was won by Sipho Mpofu’s A Balance of Power.
Festival director Raisedon Baya urged writers who wish to be part of the competition to start submitting their stories as more story submissions meant a wider pool for judges to choose from.
