INTWASA Arts Festival will this year include two nights of dance. The festival runs from 24 to 29 September. In an interview, Intwasa festival director Raisedon Baya encouraged people to attend the festival in their numbers.“The stomping of feet, gyrating hips and delicate balance of ballet feet, is what people should expect during the dance nights,” he said.
Baya said on 24 September, Flatfoot Dance Company from Durban, South Africa will be first on stage presenting a dance titled “Last Thoughts”.
“This dance is a poetic lyrical work in which dancers take an emotional journey that looks at how society defines itself. It echoes all sorts of recollections around personal and political rights. The dance showcases the power and skill of break dance,” he said.
The second group will be Tumbuka Dance Company from Harare. Tumbuka will showcase their “Can’t Talk About This” dance.
He said the dance brings out what the human spirit does when challenged with what society considers taboo. “This interesting dance won the group a standing ovation at the South African, National Arts Festival in Grahamstown,” said Baya.
A triple delight will take place on 29 September when famed Dance Foundation Course, Tumbuka Dance Company and Bulawayo based Umkhathi Theatre Works take to the stage.
“Umkhathi will present their award winning dance, “Ja Hlako”/ “We are Dancing”. The dance was first introduced in the United States of America where the group left the audience asking for more,” said Baya.
