YESTERDAY, we published the story of a nurse at Chitungwiza Central Hospital who was arrested after the body of an eight-month-old child went missing from the health facility’s mortuary.
Munashe Ganyiwa, 32, who is a nurse, was attending to Emmanuel Charindapanze, who was admitted on Saturday, in a paediatric ward.
In the early hours of Sunday, Emmanuel experienced some hiccups and his mother Shamiso Nyause, 46, called for help.
Munashe came and pronounced Emmanuel dead.
Munashe removed all the clothes of the baby and gave them to Shamiso.
The body of the child was taken to the mortuary by another nurse.
On Monday, Shamiso and her husband, Givemore Charindapanze, went to the hospital to collect the body of their deceased child.
However, the mortuary attendant told them that the child’s body was not in the mortuary.
All the children’s bodies in the mortuary were taken out for identification by their parents but Emmanuel’s body could not be found.
The mortuary attendant then called the nurse who brought and booked the child’s body into the mortuary to help him find the missing body.
The nurse then told Shamiso and Givemore that she suspected the child’s body could have been cremated.
This led to the arrest of Munashe.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest and said Munashe was arrested in connection with violating corpses in Chitungwiza.
This is a very sad story.
One can only imagine the trauma that the parents are going through right now. On one hand they are still mourning the death of their beloved child. On the other hand they are trying to deal with the trauma of the missing body of their child. Reports claim that the body of the child was cremated and this means that these unfortunate parents will never get a chance to bury their kid.
This is as bad as it can ever get for a parent.
There are many questions which still need to be answered and we hope that the police investigations will clear the air in this saga.
Why would a nurse steal a body from the mortuary and, as reported, go and cremate it?
Some are claiming that this is all tied to some voodoo acts.
We have no evidence to either agree or disagree with them but what is not questionable is that there is more to this strange act than what meets the eye.
The good thing is that the nurse at the centre of this scandal has been arrested and is likely to shed light, during the police investigations, to help us understand why she did this.
Some are saying that she could be part of a cartel and those people, who are behind the scene, should also be arrested.
The parents who lost their child deserve closure.
They took their baby to hospital because they believed this was a place where the child could be helped.
They don’t deserve what they are going through right now.
