MUTARE Remand Prison inmate, Brandon Matambo, popularly known as IP Man, defied odds to claim the King of the War Zone title at the Diamond FM Cup Clash, held last week putting his musical talent in the spotlight.
The talented Matambo clinched the crown after outshining fellow finalists, Mike Mariwo (M Jango Style) and Tanaka Madhora (Fattman) during spirited performances on Diamond FM, the local leading radio station.
His victory came just days after he performed at the Manicaland Agricultural Show arena during the official opening of the 2026 Manicaland Agricultural Show, further showcasing his talent to the public.
Officer Commanding Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Manicaland Province, Commissioner Spetosomusa Chinobva, said the service is committed to nurture inmates’ talents as part of efforts to prepare them for reintegration into society.
“We are behind Brandon. For every inmate to successfully establish himself or herself, he or she needs support. We wish him well as he takes his talent to challenge the outside community. We will continue to support such initiatives,” said Commissioner Chinobva.
Matambo thanked ZPCS for offering him the opportunity to showcase his talent while serving his sentence, and appealed for sponsorship to help him grow his music career.
“I thank ZPCS for allowing me to use my talent while in prison. This really means a lot to me, and I know I am destined for greater heights. I am, however, appealing to well-wishers for sponsorship to make my artistic dreams come true,” he said.
One of his competitors, Madhora, conceded defeat, saying Matambo’s victory did not come as a surprise.
“It was fair. As soon as I saw IP Man, we knew he was going to win because we know him. He is so talented and we wish him the best,” he said.
Matambo’s achievement highlights the role of music in providing inmates with opportunities to develop their talents and remain connected to the entertainment industry.
Through its rehabilitation and reintegration programmes, ZPCS seeks to equip inmates with skills and experiences that can help them become productive members of society after serving their sentences.
For IP Man, the King of the War Zone title marks another milestone in his musical journey and could open doors to new opportunities, with sponsorship and support likely to be crucial in developing his career.
