The Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ) recently donated to Parirenyatwa Hospital’s Annex Psychiatric Unit, which specialises in mental health service delivery.
The professional organisation donated a CCTV camera, kitchen equipment that included a refrigerator, a four-plate stove and baking tray.
In a speech read on her behalf by senior nursing officer Ms Eva Chombo during the tour and official handover ceremony, Parirenyatwa Hospital’s director of operations Mr Edson Mundenda lauded IPMZ for its generous gesture.
“We are gathered here because of the generosity of the Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe as they have taken a step to engage Annex Hospital and give donations to this hospital,” he said.
“All patients are admitted under the Mental Health Act of 1996. The patients we deal with at this hospital are unique in the sense that they need specialised care. Extra caution has to be exercised and infrastructure needs to be frequently refurbished to ensure their security and that of staff around them.
“They require a high nurse-to-patient ratio due to their delicacy. The donation here today will go a long way in improving service delivery at Annex Hospital.”
Mr Mundenda said while the hospital had 34 beds, there was need to improve the capacity in order to prepare for the anticipated increase in mental health illnesses.
IPMZ vice president for public relations and marketing Mr Philimon Chitagu said the organisation had fund raised for the donation in December last year.
“When the funds were available, the council made a decision to assist institutions dealing with mental health,” he said.
“We identified Annex and Ingutsheni hospitals and engaged the two institutions on what priorities they had in mind. We acted on requirements by institutions as presented.”
