The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran has congratulated Zimbabwe on the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays that seek to celebrate those who contributed towards the country’s liberation.

In a statement, the Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Zimbabwe Mr Hamid Bakhtiyar said heroes who perished during the struggle for independence to pave way for independence deserve to be remembered.

“The cultural counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Zimbabwe extends his sincere congratulations to our Zimbabwean brothers and sisters on the occasion of the Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day,” he said.

He went on to quote famous Iranian poet Ferdowsi who said the names of those who had great goals and fought to achieve them would always remain etched in the history of a country.

Zimbabwe and Iran have shared cordial relations dating back to the time of the liberation struggle.

The relations have continued to be strengthened over the years.

This year’s Heroes Day commemorations were preceded by the burial of two national heroes, Ambassador Johannes Tomana and Brigadier-General (Retired) Milton Siziba.

The commemorations were held under the theme, “Remembering our heroes — Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo”.

Today, the country celebrates Defence Forces Day under the theme, “Brick by brick, Stone upon stone -Zimbabwe Defence Forces: Creating a conducive environment for the attainment of Vision 2030.”
