‘Irrigation key to regaining breadbasket status’

Mr Wonder Chabikwa said the country had abundant water bodies that could be harnessed to produce different crops throughout the year.
“In Zimbabwe we have good climate and water reservoirs but we are not producing to our full potential due to limited use of irrigation equipment,” he said.
“If farmers employ irrigation it will go a long way in improving national yields,” he said.

Mr Chabikwa said the failure to utilise the numerous water bodies was an indictment on the country which continued to experience food shortages due to droughts.
He urged the Government to increase funding to agriculture while farmers should adopt modern irrigation systems.

“In the final analysis we appeal to the Government to fund agriculture and also urge farmers to embark on smart agriculture practice such as drip irrigation which is energy and water saving.
He said these practices could sustain agriculture while also curbing the growing effects o9f climate change. — New Ziana.
