FOR some time now, it has appeared a done deal – William Manondo will win the Golden Boot.
And, possibly, if he is lucky, even the Soccer Star of the Year award, which would be quite remarkable, given CAPS United’s struggles.
But, with just five games before the season ends, it’s no longer guaranteed that Manondo will win the top scorer gong.
Another man, with the same initials (WM), Walter Musona, is now posing a big challenge.
Despite seeing little action, during the early days of the season, Musona is now just five goals behind Manondo.
Musona is also among a few players at FC Platinum who are also on the verge of lifting the league title for the first time.
He is in his best form, and has netted 10 times, surpassing Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, as the team’s leading goal scorer.
Ngwenya is on eight goals.
Last Sunday, he showed his true value by grabbing a brace against Highlanders, at Barbourfields.
Usually, when a local player flops in a foreign league, they either become worse, when they come back home, or consider retirement.
But, Musona is proving otherwise considering how he has resurrected his career to become FC Platinum’s main player.
The 26-year-old opted for a return to Mandava, after struggling to cope with a series of career-threatening injuries, in South Africa.
Musona’s camp revealed that the midfielder was not initially well received on his return to the mining town.
In fact, some of the club’s leaders were convinced he was not the same player anymore and was not worth their investment.
He was assessed for three months before being handed a contract.
In fact, he almost joined Ngezi Platinum Stars during that period.
Now, Musona is repaying Norman Mapeza, who stood by him, in some style.
He is one of the main contenders for the Soccer Star of the Year award.
