Construction of an arts and heritage centre, Isizinda Cultural Village, is set to begin in Maphisa, Matobo District, as part of preparations for this year’s Independence Day celebrations to be held in Matabeleland South Province on April 18.
The project forms part of a broader national drive to promote and strengthen creative and cultural industries while preserving local heritage and empowering communities through the arts.
National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (Nacz) Matabeleland South provincial arts officer Percy Vela said preparations for the celebrations were progressing well, with the cultural village expected to showcase the region’s rich traditions and identity.
“We recently held a preparatory meeting in consultation with Chief Fuyane, officials from the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Recreation, and community advisors to the Chief. The site is adjacent to where the stadium is being constructed, near the Maphisa Rural District Council growth point,” said Vela.
He said the village will mirror a traditional Ndebele homestead and serve as a permanent arts and culture hub even beyond the Independence celebrations.
“The cultural village will feature huts resembling a traditional Ndebele village, an exhibition hall, a kiosk, changing rooms, a performance stage, and an administration block. Construction is expected to start soon.”
The facility is anticipated to provide a platform for local artists, cultural groups and creatives to showcase their talent, while boosting cultural tourism and economic activity in the district.
