IT sector hails training programme

Business Reporter
STAKEHOLDERS in the information technology industry have hailed this year’s first training programme in virtualisation and cloud computing solutions software, VMWARE, held by local IT firm, Axis Solutions.
The training was held in Harare last week under the VMWARE install, configure and manage programme for IT professionals on the concept of server virtualisation and benefits of VMWARE.

Server virtualisation is a technology that allows multiple servers to run on the same hardware, appearing as if they were distinct physical systems but in reality sharing computer processors, memory and storage.
In an interview with VMWARE certified instructor from South Africa, Mr Willie Newland, said the training enlightened trainees in several ways.

“During the training I figured that at least 90 percent of the trainees were aware of the software but were ignorant of the benefits as well as how to access the benefits,” said Mr Newland.

Cuts costs
“Among the benefits of VMWARE, server virtualisation is on the top lists because it reduces cost of buying hardware for each server, saves time as operations are quickened, servers operations can continue even when one hardware stops functioning, saves time for production as there is no need for server monitors, improves efficiency, saves space and power.”
Mr Newland urged IT personnel to continue training on how to install, configure and manage VMWARE software in order to bring a positive change in the IT industry in Zimbabwe.

In a separate interview, one of the beneficiaries of the training programme from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Mr Phineas Chimwe, said the IT industry has impressed by VMWARE due to its benefits that reduce costs in such an economic condition.

“Personally I have learnt a lot from the training, initially I understood the pros and cons of VMWARE in theory,  however, after the five-day training I am  now able to do it practically,” said Mr Chimwe.

“It is ideal to move with advanced technology and as an IT professional, I hope the knowledge and skills will be decentralised to more IT personnel countrywide for the benefit of the economy.”

Axis Solutions is a specialist local IT company that focuses on the delivery of value added technology solutions to customers, such as data centre, security, back-up and storage.

In-depth knowledge
The company’s accounting manager, Miss Taurai Mugara, said the main reason they conduct such trainings once or twice a year is to improve products knowledge on clients.

“Since we are the only enterprise partner in the country for outstanding expertise in VMWARE virtualisation, it is essential for our clients to have an in-depth knowledge on the products that they buy to fully utilize,” said Miss Mugara.

“We need the clients to enjoy the benefits of using our products and thus we offer training. Among our trainees  there were representatives from Econet, IDBZ, National Oil and Infrastructure Company of Zimbabwe, Savanna  Tobacco and FBC to mention but just a                         few.”
