ZIMBABWE’s rising star Aliya Phiri faces the biggest moment in his boxing career when he engages Israel Kamwamba of Malawi for the African Boxing Union lightweight title at 7 Arts Theatre tonight.

It’s not only Phiri’s big night but even bigger for the country which is hosting an ABU title fight for the very first time.

And, for Phiri, who is having his first shot at a title fight, carrying the country’s hopes on his shoulders means the world.

He oozed confidence during yesterday’s weigh-in and face-off at the venue of the fight in Avondale and promised to do the nation proud.

“I have put everything in training for the past two months preparing for this big moment, the biggest moment in my career,” said Phiri.

“I know this is going to be a very tough fight for me given the profile of my opponent.

“He has been in Zimbabwe previously and he wrestled a title here. That tells you about his quality.

“But I don’t have any option here. I have to teach him a lesson. I have prepared for this day and it’s finally here. I know of one thing only which is to win this fight. I will make sure that he suffers. This is my moment and I am going to seize it with both hands.

“I am ready to rumble, I hope he is also ready to suffer in that ring”.

The fight will be graced by Government officials, including the Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Emily Jesaya.

Meanwhile the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board will this afternoon hold a plenary session to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence at the National Sports Stadium.

Running under the theme “Women in gloves against gender-based violence”, the event will see leading female boxers in the country like Monalisa Sibanda in attendance.

ZNBWCB acting chief executive, Priscilla Kadungure, said all was set for this event.
