A HARARE man appeared in court yesterday for allegedly possessing ivory without a permit.

Author Edwin Kowe was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

He was advised to approach the High Court for bail application and will be back in court on March 6.

Prosecutor, Pardon Dziva, said detectives from the Minerals Flora and Fauna unit were tipped off that there was a man in possession of ivory in Hatfield, who was looking for buyers.

The cops went to Hatfield and posed as buyers.

One detective lured Kowe to Water Works along Chiremba Road.

The States said Kowe showed the detective two pieces of raw ivory, which were in a green sack.

While the two were still negotiating, the other detectives appeared and, when Kowe realised that he had been cornered, he tried to flee.

Police fired warning shots and then apprehended him.

The ivory was worth US$884.
