JAILBIRDS TURN HUSTLERS:Extort $500 from murder accused to “reduce charge”

B-Metro Reporter

FOUR men have been dragged into the dock after police in Mutare nabbed them for allegedly fleecing a desperate woman of US$500 in a slick extortion scam.
Police identified the suspects as Nigel Godwin Mukuruzado (34), Reginald Ndarera (20), Shaloom Nyamazana (26) and Tinashe Chiwaye (28). The quartet allegedly pounced on the complainant whose husband is facing murder charges.
According to police, one of the suspects had struck up a friendship with the complainant’s husband while they were both remanded in custody at Mutare Prison. He later contacted the woman with a tantalising promise that he could “facilitate the reduction of her husband’s murder charges to culpable homicide.”

Believing she was buying her husband’s freedom, the woman reportedly gave in when the suspects demanded US$500 to work their so-called legal magic.
But their luck ran out when police pounced during the handover of the cash.

In a statement police said: “On 27/08/25, Police in Mutare arrested four suspects in connection with a case of extortion. The accused persons were arrested while receiving the US$500 which they had demanded.”
The accused are expected to appear in court soon facing extortion charges.
